There are many traditional and sacred temples in the mountainous landscape of Goishizan and Dounzan.
The total length of the pilgrimage route in Shodoshima is about 150 kilometres, which links 88 sites, many of which exist in the spiritual caves. In the former times, the monks would come for ascetic practices and reaching these places was very difficult. Nowadays roads are much more accessible.
Even if you do not take part in the pilgrimage, these places are worth visiting, and most of the temples are all located close together, so you can go to several temples at once.
